What is Traditional Chinese Medicine?

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a holistic approach to healthcare that has been practised for thousands of years. It focuses on understanding the body as a connected system, where physical health, emotional wellbeing, and lifestyle all work together.

Rather than treating symptoms alone, TCM aims to identify and address the underlying cause of imbalance. Treatments are tailored to the individual and may include acupuncture, herbal medicine, and therapeutic massage.

The goal of TCM is to restore balance, support the body’s natural healing processes, and improve overall health — both in the short term and long term.

What to Expect:

Your First Appointment

Your first TCM appointment with Lincoln lasts around 60–75 minutes. The consultation is thorough and may feel quite different to a conventional medical appointment. As well as discussing your main concerns, Lincoln will ask about a wide range of factors — including your sleep, digestion, energy levels, emotional health, and lifestyle, because in TCM, everything is connected.

He will also carry out a TCM physical assessment, which typically includes examining your tongue and taking your pulse at both wrists. These diagnostic methods give Lincoln important information about the state of your internal health and help guide your treatment plan.

Acupuncture Treatment

If acupuncture is recommended, very fine sterile needles will be inserted into specific points on the body. Most people feel little or no discomfort as the needles are placed, and many describe a sensation of heaviness, tingling, or warmth around the needle site, which is a normal and positive sign that the point has been activated. Needles are typically left in place for 20–30 minutes while you rest.

Tuina and Herbal Medicine

If Tuina massage or herbal medicine is recommended, Lincoln will explain clearly how these will work alongside or instead of acupuncture, what to expect from the treatment, and for herbal prescriptions how and when to take them.

What to Wear

Please wear loose, comfortable clothing to your TCM appointment. For acupuncture, Lincoln will need access to specific points on the body — commonly the lower arms, lower legs, back, and abdomen — so clothing that rolls up easily is ideal. You will remain appropriately covered and comfortable throughout. Tuina massage is performed through light clothing.

After Your Appointment

Some people feel deeply relaxed or slightly tired after acupuncture, this is a normal response and a sign the treatment is working. Occasionally people notice a brief flare of their symptoms before improvement, which is a recognised part of the healing process. Lincoln will give you clear guidance on what to expect and how to support your treatment between sessions.

Follow-up Appointments

Follow-up sessions are typically 45–60 minutes. Lincoln will review your progress at each appointment and adjust your treatment plan accordingly.

FAQs

Chinese Herbal Medicine (CHM), which has been practiced in China for over 3000 years, is one of the greatest herbal systems in the medicine world. However, such a long history doesn’t mean CHM is either backward or simplistic compared with modern biomedicine. CHM has continually developed to respond to any changing clinical conditions and, very recently, has been sustained and enhanced by research into every aspect of how it is used.

CHM has had a great influence on the theory and practice of medicine in those countries surrounded by China, and it still plays a very important role in healthcare in modern China, where it is provided in state hospitals alongside biomedicine. Recently, CHM has grown in popularity in the Western world. How to practice Chinese herbal medicine Just like practice acupuncture, CHM focuses on the individual with various disease conditions.

Lincoln will produce an individual formula as the art of the herbalist, derived from classical formulae and then tailored to the individual patient’s needs. Chinese medicine is based on a Daoist understanding of the human body, closely influenced by its environment as a finely balanced system connection. Chinese medicine is not only to cure but also to prevent illness; eventually, herbalists will focus on supporting harmony and rebalancing the body’s order. CHM enables herbalists to apply Chinese medicine to a deeper level, treat difficult cases more effectively and quickly, and treat some cases we wouldn’t have been able to treat at all with other methods. At least patients take their herbs; they have a daily herb treatment. Many of them said that the more their condition improves, the better the herbs taste! And because herbs can be cheaper than regular treatments, it will be more financially sustainable for so many people.

Chinese herbal formulas can clear or move stagnation, tonify deficiencies and clear factors of pathogenicity, nourish blood and the qi, and calm the shen. CHM treatment is extremely effective in acute conditions and equally effective in chronic and complex conditions like those we see in the West. In recent Western studies, there has been a lot of evidence. Available treatments for CHM include those for eczema, irritable bowel syndrome, endometriosis, infertility, and so on. The complexity of a formula could make herbal TCM remedies a good option for treating complex diseases that involve many targets and multiple biological processes.

TCM is usually slow-acting and has long-lasting effects. So it’s suitable for chronic or preventive use against conditions such as inflammation and cardiovascular diseases. In contrast to Western medicine, there isn’t a herbal formula for everyone because CHM is always tailored to the individual, from the body, the mind, and the spirit as well, in response to the whole person.

During the treatment, physical diagnoses are made on the basis of the color or shape of someone’s tongue, taking their pulse, looking at their skin, and so on, not only a medical history. Lincoln is experienced and knowledgeable and provides a friendly environment for treatment.

Tuina is a therapeutic massage used in TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine). It has been practised in China over thousands of years. Practitioners work on the surface of the body to stimulate major points to achieve and improve the body’s natural healing process through tension release, Qi and Blood circulation.

Tuina massage can be deep, penetrating and vigorous, relaxing and calming, or a combination – it depends upon the condition being treated and your own preferences. It can be performed through light clothing or directly on the skin.

During the treatment, the Tuina practitioner will stimulate different Acu-points to unblock many meridians or channels thus breaking down adhesions. Now, Tuina has played a very important role in the Chinese medical world over taking Physiotherapy, Chiropractic and Osteopathy in China.

Tuina is suitable for children and adults, including older people who may be more frail, and is of particular benefit to anyone who does not like needles. I most commonly combine it with acupuncture when treating headaches, shoulder, neck and back pain and other muscle and joint problems and for relaxation at the end of a treatment.

Tongue diagnostic skills are one of the most important components of the four diagnostic methods used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Careful tongue observation can reveal significant signs and imbalances, often before clients themselves are aware of symptoms. It helps reflect past health conditions as well as indicate potential future imbalances. For patients who live a long distance from my clinic, tongue diagnosis is a highly effective way to assess their condition from the comfort of their own home. Based on the tongue findings, herbal formulas are prescribed according to the individual’s condition and are typically reviewed on a weekly basis to ensure effectiveness and appropriate adjustment.

We need to gain a thorough understanding of your main complaint and your general health. This involves asking questions about your current symptoms and your medical history as well as such things as your sleeping patterns, appetite, digestion and emotional wellbeing. Women are also asked about their menstrual cycle and any past pregnancies and childbirth.

Concerning your main complaint, you will be asked things like: how long you have been having the symptoms, how severe they are, whether they are constant or intermittent and what makes them better or worse.

You may feel that some questions appear unrelated to your condition but the information you give helps us to form a more complete picture of your health. We will also take your pulse on both wrists and may examine your tongue.

Please allow about 60 to 90 minutes for the first consultation and the first treatment.

Scared of needles or extra sensitive to pain?

Acupuncture needles are much finer than those used in clinical settings. Most people don’t feel pain and many don’t feel the needles at all. Quite often dull aches can be experienced as if deep massage is applied, which we consider a sign that the needles are doing good work!

Japanese style needles can be used which are designed for pain sensitive people and cause less friction.
